In Paving the Way, Evans' family members, former players, hall-of-fame coaches and athletes, civil rights leaders, journalists, and many others recount Evans's long and determined path to success. His story begins in the small, dusty oil town of Hobbs, New Mexico. He was a player under Naismith Hall of Fame Coach Ralph Tasker at Hobbs High School.
Evans went on to sign as a free agent with the Raiders. Later, he began his college career as a shooting guard at Lubbock Christian Junior college before transferring to New Mexico State University, where his team competed in the Final Four. A multi-sport athlete, Rob tried out for the Oakland Raiders football team at the persuasion of Hall of Famer John Madden. He made the team but knew that his destiny was to be a coach and mentor of young men. He then embarked on an illustrious coaching career, highlighted by head coaching positions at The University of Mississippi and Arizona State University.
The path was not easy for Coach Evans. In fact, he spent over 20 years as an assistant before he received his first Division 1 head coaching offer from the University of Mississippi. At Ole Miss, he rebuilt the program from ruins, winning back-to-back SEC West titles in 1997 and 1998.
